Olivia Barry is proud to announce that Rodeo, one of two new launches debuted at NYCxDESIGN 2025, has won this year’s award in the pendant fixture category. Olivia also introduced Pennant, her first multi-light pendant at the annual design event.
This year’s win achieves a ‘hat trick’ for Olivia—her third NYCxDESIGN award—following Moon Light in 2024 and Scroll Luminaire Sconce Pair in 2023. “It’s an incredible honor,” she says. “I’m continually inspired by the talent and imagination NYCxDESIGN brings together, and humbled to be a category winner.”
Rodeo and Pennant mark the designer/artist’s first ceiling-mounted pieces. Since launching Olivia Barry / By Hand in 2022 with her series of table and floor-based Scroll luminaires, she soon expanded into wall sconces and wall mounted artwork that she calls ‘clay paintings’. Her work now appears in private collections and public spaces alike—including JFK’s British Airways Lounge, which features her 20’ wide Atmosphere installation.
With Rodeo and Pennant, Olivia explores a new orientation and expressive language in light. Rodeo, reimagines the classic rounded pendant with a circular ceramic disk that forms a linear envelope meant to visually connect to rectangular forms like countertops, tables and kitchen islands. The internal slip cast socket cover is made from slip cast ceramic, eliminating any metallic surfaces to create a matte white interior that enhances the sculptural effect of the illumination.
Pennant—a year in development—translates her signature Scroll Luminaire form into a ceiling-mounted configuration. The repeated, overlapping curves house multiple bulbs in what Olivia describes as a “multi-light pendant.” She notes, “The word chandelier conjures images of twinkling crystal, which can be beautiful—but it’s not the look Pennant brings to a space.” Olivia credits legendary ceramicist Eva Zeisel, whom she worked with for over a decade, as inspiration for the curves she uses, including the sail-like forms of Pennant. “Eva taught me that we have an emotional connection to shape—a curve can lift you. These forms feel ready to take off. I wanted this piece to carry a sense of joy and optimism.”
Rodeo and Pennant are available at oliviabarrybyhand.com and select retailers.
